That's really what last Saturday's game was. It was bittersweet. I hate seeing the Heels go down, but then again, that's as far as I had UNC going in my bracket.
I'm having trouble deciding if Saturday's game was a good game. The first 10 minutes consisted of UNC being dominated in a way I've never seen before. We've played some tough opponents before. We've played some good Duke teams, we've battled it out against some great programs, but I've never seen UNC dominated like that before. We kept running and running but no matter how fast we ran, Kansas was always waiting on us. We were utterly manhandled. It was ugly.
But as much as that was bad...I'm hesitant to call Saturday's game a bad game. We started on a comeback for the ages. We were once down by 28. We pulled within 5. During that stretch it was an opposite story. Kansas was shut down offensively. They looked like Middle School girls playing defense. We pulled within 5 and I was beginning to think UNC had this game won, even though we weren't winning at that point.
After UNC made it a 5 point game, Coach self called a timeout. I'm not sure what was said during that timeout, but whatever he said, it worked! Kansas then ended the game on a pretty impressive run of their own.
I was a little disappointed because I felt like we never got to see both teams playing their "A" game at the same time, which is what every fan wants to see at the final four.
It's been really tough thinking of last saturday's game as the final four. It was a final four game, but it had championship game atmosphere.
All in all, it probably hurt UNC that so many of their games during this tournament were "home" games. It helped them get to the final four, but it probably hurt them in the final four, they were so used to having the crowd behind them.
Again, it would have been nice to see UNC win, but this is exactly how far I had them going in my bracket. Actually, not to pat myself on the back or anything, but this Championship game is exactly what I predicted. Memphis was my eventual champion.
We'll see what happens. Tonights game should be fun.
